Our logs are milled from dead-standing Lodgepole Pine. This means that the logs have a low moisture content at milling time, so they don't shrink much. Usually less than 3/4" at the top of an 8 ft wall. There are two grades: Regular or Rustic. Regular logs are shown above in this home under construction. Regular logs are milled smooth with few irregularities. Rustic logs pass through the same mill as the Regular logs, but may have some bark left on them after milling. We place these logs off to the side and hand skin the bark off of them. This leaves depressions and irregularities in the Rustic logs. Up to 25% of a log can have these irregularities and depressions. They don't affect the structural properties of the log. In some cases Rustic logs are preferred due to their hand skinned look and feel. Rustic logs are shown below in this partially constructed home. |

| Below, the Area of Interest is enlarged to show the depressions and irregularities that can occur in Rustic logs. Here we see a but joint where one of the log ends is smaller than the other where it was hand skinned. |
